The Advanced Authoring Format (AAF) and Material eXchange Format (MXF) are standard file formats used for exchanging media essence and metadata. The metadata is defined in a metadata model which is common to both file formats and this ensures that the metadata can be expressed and exchanged in either file format without requiring complex mappings. The metadata model has been designed to support extensions and this allows the model to evolve and support a wide range of applications. This paper will describe the building blocks of the metadata model and describe how the metadata is mapped onto the physical file formats.
