Class D power amplifiers have been on the periphery of audio amplifier design for more than 20 years. Recently, a number of factors are contributing to lift the technology into the mainstream. This paper describes the basic building blocks of an all-digital class D amplifier. Techniques critical to achieving good performance are discussed in more detail. Proper implementation of class D amplifiers offers the promise of an all-digital signal chain, resulting in near of performance at reasonable cost.
