A Variable Compliance Phonograph Cartridge

Document Thumbnail

The proper matching of tone arm and cartridge is a necessary condition to achieve optimum performance in a disc playback system. Placement of the low frequency tone arm/cartridge resonance at or around 10 Hz avoids problems arising from lower-frequency vibration sources such as record warp and structural resonances. Acoustical energy sources typically remain above the 10 Hz area in frequency content as well. This resonance reflects tone arm effective mass and cartridge compliance. Since tone arm modification to affect tone arm effective mass is a task beyond the average users ability, a cartridge design is developed which allows user adjustment of the cartridge compliance.
