The time, frequency, and polar energy response of flat panels, with and without distributed absorption, mono- and bi-cylindrical columns and reflecting phase grating diffusers were measured, using a boundary measurement technique based on time-delay spectrometry. Energy-time curves, directivity-energy-frequency curves, frequency-directivity contours, and conventional octave-averaged polar patterns are presented for 0° and 45° incidence. Experimental data indicates that of all of the scattering surfaces studied, only the reflection phase grating possesses all of the properties of an ideal diffuser.
