Efficiency of Noise Barriers with Non-straight Edge Profiles

A straight edge of a noise barrier causes that in some areas behind the screen the noise level is increased instead of decreased. Still the noise barriers are today commonly built with straight edges. An exact analytical solution describing the sound field for straight noise barriers as well as barriers with periodical edge profiles has earlier been derived. It was also shown that for a given frequency, there is an optimum length of the period of the edge profile. Using these solutions, we have examined how to construct an efficient edge profile for a broadband signal with a given spectrum.
