The use of a magnetic storage disk in place of tape in an integrated recording/editing production system provides a number of productivity benefits. A suitable worksurface developed for the specialized requirements of random access editing is discussed. A dual bus system architecture interconnects various specialized digital signal processing elements. Play/record synchronization is implemented using time code, house video reference sources, or pilot tone. Transfer of audio material on and off the disk storage unit requires reliable and error corrected transfers. The two most promising approaches are high capacity/low cost cartridge tape steamers and high capacity random access optical disks.
