Multitone Testing of Audio Systems
The authors have tested a number of broadcast systems and other audio gear with rapid tests using multitones, and with normal stepped tones, to develop the use of rapid tests, and to study the multitone itself. Such tests provide a comprehensive battery of measurements, but they must be administered with care. Response, distortion, noise, and channel separation can be assessed off-air in broadcast and normal systems. If enough frequencies are used in the multitone, the full transfer function and the impulse response can be recovered.
