The Number of Loudspeaker Channels
As the number of audio channels grows in the mass market from two to 5.1 and 7.1, it is useful to examine the physical- and psycho-acoustical reasons for adding channels beyond today's standards to provide a road map to the future. The tradeoff amongst bandwidth, dynamic range, and spatial capability is considered, defining the capability of any medium, along with the added sensations to be gained from adding more loudspeaker channels. Development of 10.2 channel sound and upwards activities will be described. Note: no actual paper was submitted - only the abstract is available.
