AES Amsterdam 2008 Technical Tour Details Monday, May 19, 12:00 — 16:00
TT1 - POLYHYMNIA
Abstract: Classical Recording and Mastering Services, Baarn
The famous Philips Classical mastering studios now offer comprehensive recording and mastering services under their own flag. The newest recording techniques, from standard stereo to advanced surround, will be demonstrated. Also restoring old recordings and transfer to the newest digital formats will be shown.

TT2 - RECORD INDUSTRY VINYL PRESSING PLANT
Abstract: Vinyl Pressing Plant, Haarlem
Record Industry is the largest vinyl pressing plant in Europe. With 31 presses they have a production capacity of at least 40,000 records per shift. The facilities are comprise of three studios to cater to all needs: vinyl lacquer and DMM cutting, CD mastering, and archive restoration. As a special service they supplied "Historic Masters" with 78 RPM pressings. Mr. Sean Davies, well known AES member and technical member of Historic Masters, and Rinus Hooning, Audio Manager Record Industry, are able to press from 100 (or more)-year old 78 RPM metal parts, using custom made tooling. The tour will start at the studios followed by a visit to the galvanic department (metal plating), the actual pressing plant, and the packaging department. At the end of the tour there will be time for questions and answers.

TT3 - TECHNICAL UNIVERISITY AT DELFT—ACOUSTIC GROUP
Abstract: Acoustics Group, Delft
After an introductory presentation on the research program of the Delft Acoustics Group - ranging from imaging techniques for seismic exploration and medical diagnostics to traffic noise abatement and surround sound reproduction - demonstrations will be given of present work related to audio technology. Attention will be paid, among others, to sound recording using a spherical microphone array, sound reproduction in WFS format using flat panel loudspeaker arrays, improvement of speech intelligibility using hearing glasses, and new approaches to the interpretation of room impulse responses.

TT4 - TECHNICOLOR NETHERLANDS
Abstract: Hilversum
Technicolor Netherlands (formerly NOB) is the full service, innovative facilitator for the creation, handling, storage, broadcast, and distribution of content for radio, television, internet, and mobile. Customers are telecom operators, internet service providers, cable network operators, producers, commercial, and public broadcasters. The tour to the Mediapark in Hilversum gives access to the facilities for NOS and Netherlands Public Broadcasting. You will visit the Media Gateway's datacenter, the Broadcast Compression Platform where RTV signals are delivered to cable network operators, the fully digitized and tapeless News Floor of the NOS, the Master Control Room, and the Radio Continuity rooms for Radio 1.

TT5 - PHILIPS RESEARCH LABORATORIES
Abstract: Philips Research is one of the world largest corporate research organizations and has a rich history of producing successful innovations in the areas of healthcare, lifestyle, and technology. The program of this tour is centered on new developments in sound technology. After a short overview of Philips Research in general, several demonstrations will be given within the area of spatial audio reproduction, enhanced audio reproduction, music information retrieval technology, and spatial audio coding.

TT6 - VISION & SOUND EXPERIENCE—DUTCH BROADCAST ARCHIVE
Abstract: Vision & Sound Experience is the new national archive of the Dutch Radio and Television broadcast. The new iconic building also contains an interactive show for the public. The technical tour starts with a small lunch followed by a guided tour through the immense archives, a visit to the interactive show, and ends with a challenging discussion about optimal archiving procedures and techniques.
