AES Technical Committee
Microphones and Applications
Chair: Eddy Bogh Brixen (Send E-mail) Vice Chair: David Josephson (Send E-mail)
Over the past half century, developments in electronics have removed nearly every electrical limitation in audio performance. However, the transducers at the ends of the signal chain remain the main source of nonlinearity in reproduced sound. This committee serves as a focal point for information on new theories and techniques in microphone transducer technology and application.
Areas of Concentration
- Design Theory
- Promoting Awareness of Emerging Technologies
- Analog, Power and Digital Interface Methods
- Objective Measurement Techniques
- Subjective Measurement Techniques
- Psychoacoustic Interpretation of Performance
- Specifications Correlated with Perception
Current Areas Of Work
At this moment the TCMA is providing input for workshops, tutorials, etc. to be held in conjunction with society conventions.
Recent/Planned Activities
- The TC-MA is now planning for an International Conference to take place during spring/early summer 2014.
- The topics will cover leading edge within microphone technology and application. The venue and the ecact dates have not been chosen at this point. However, more information should be available after the AES convention in San Francisco, October 2012.
Detailed Microphone Specifications
Despite efforts of the IEC and other standards bodies, microphone manufacturers have not adopted a standard method for measuring microphone performance and presenting these specifications to their customers. In conjunction with AES Standards Committee Working Group SC-04-04 on Microphone Characterization, we are attempting to develop and refine the interface between microphone maker and (potential) user, so that the user can have a clearer idea of the microphone performance characteristics that the maker intends.
