140th Convention Extends Early Registration PricingAES 140th Convention With an expanded Technical Program and a doubling in professional audio gear and technology exhibitors to over 130 brands, the AES Paris Convention has announced an extended deadline for Early Registration pricing and FREE Exhibits-Plus badges until Thursday, May 26. This year’s keynote speaker at the opening ceremony is Alex U. Case, President Elect of the AES, with an address entitled “Intuition, Rebellion, Courage, and Chance – Historic Moments of Creative Signal Processing That Resonate to This Day.” “Learning from the ear-grabbing sonic inventions that came before us, we can be better prepared should audio fate drop-in on our recording session,” suggests Case. The Richard C. Heyser distinguished lecturer is Rozenn Nicol, presenting "The 3D Audio Revolution from Labs to Mass Market." Immersive audio promises an enhanced 3D audio experience, where virtual sound sources can be accurately synthesized in any direction, Nicol will explain. However, it requires complex loudspeaker setups so runs the risk of being limited to movie theaters or amusement parks. Binaural adaptation to headphone listening may provide an answer. Take a look at the Call for Papers and Engineering Briefs and submit your proposal by August 3. Topics for engineering briefs can be very wide-ranging. Relaxed reviewing of submissions will consider mainly whether they are of interest to AES convention attendees and are not overly commercial, so it's a good way to maximise exposure for your project, idea or engineering development. Three profiles for Precision Time Protocol (PTP) might potentially be used in the professional media environment: the Peer-to-Peer Default PTP Profile of IEEE Std 1588-2008, the Media Profile of AES67 and the SMPTE Profile of SMPTE ST 2059-2. This report compares the profiles and identifies features and parameter ranges that should enable interoperability among equipment conforming to the different profiles. AES standards are available to AES members free of charge as a benefit of membership.
