Using a novel mathematical methodology, based on the analytic time and spectral description of the instantaneously sampled PCM signal and the analytic PCM-to-PWM mapper, the exact nature of the PWM-induced distortions were derived; and an exact description of the generated mapping error in both the time and frequency domains is presented. The effect of the input PCM signal and the conversion parameters were assessed for several cases of PCM-to-PWM conversion.
