Some Defects in Amplifier Performance Not Covered by Standard Specifications
Physiological research has shown that the very low orders of distortion reepresented by the specifications of modern amplifiers should be inaudible, but the fact remains that considerable distortion can be heard in cases where the measured distortion, by methods at present standard, is far below the limits determined to be audible. This paper examines critically some of the possible forms of distortion that can be audible under such circumstances. Methods of detecting their presence are described, with the intention of providing a basis for future forms of specification, more indicative of significant practical amplifier performance than are the present standards.
