SC-04-03 meeting, New York, 2009-10

Report of the meeting of the SC-04-03 Working Group on Loudspeaker Modeling and Measurement of the SC-04 Subcommittee on Acoustics meeting, held in New York, 2009-10-10

The meeting was chaired by S. Hutt.

The agenda and the report of the previous meeting were agreed as written.

Open Projects

AES-1id-R: Review of AES-1id-1991 (r2003): Plane-Wave Tubes: Design and Practice
Project scope: to establish, expand, and improve the practice for the design and use of plane-wave tube measurement techniques, as recommended in section 2.2.1 of AES2-1984, "Recommended Practice Specification of Loudspeaker Components Used in Professional Audio and Sound Reinforcement."

Awaiting secretariat formatting.

AES-5id-R: Review of AES-5id-1997 (r2009): AES information document for Room acoustics and sound-reinforcement systems - Loudspeaker modeling and measurement - Frequency and angular resolution for measuring, presenting and predicting loudspeaker polar data
AES56 was published 2009-03-10, SC-04-03 needs to get on task to review it, looking for validation that AES-5id can be withdrawn, or alternatively, should be re-engaged. [Sec Note: The CFC to withdraw AES-5id was cancelled due to an inability to reconcile comments arising. AES-5id was therefore reaffirmed instead, pending further action]

AES2-R: Review of AES2-1984 (r2003): AES Recommended Practice - Specification of loudspeaker components used in professional audio and sound reinforcement
Discussed the issue that this should be a standard, not a recommended practice.

Part 1 is pretty much ready for release with exception of the definition of the noise generator that is intended to be bundled with the standard. D. Keele agreed to get back to completing the generator. Secretariat requested delivery by end of year, Keele not sure if he can meet that date.

It was agreed that a master reference Wave file should be created ( or more than one) and that the ".m" Matlab script file would be made available. Additionally, when server space can be available a self-supporting Noise Generator Matlab runfile could be made available.

Part 2: Buck posted his latest draft 2009-10-08. Good progress, but some semantics still to be agreed on.

It is clear that momentum must be maintained between convention meetings so, we will explore having web meetings bi-weekly or monthly. Scott Orth volunteered to explore possibility of Polk sponsoring the Web hosting.

Development Projects

AES-X129 : Loudspeaker Distortion Perception and Measurement
Project scope: to research the correlation of loudspeaker distortion perception with old and new distortion measures.

There has been no feedback from van Maanen on his Munich offer to participate. There has been no communication yet with the TC on Loudspeakers & Headphones.

D. Foley will begin a foundation for an information document by reviewing current literature, starting with the Voishvillo papers & creating an up to date reference list highlighting perception and measurement of loudspeaker distortion.

Hutt will send communication to the TC Loudspeakers & Headphones to engage them in the discussion.

Liaisons

ALMA
Dan Field has resigned as ALMA standards manager. Spiro Iraclianos, one of Dan's Harman/Becker colleagues has taken the post.

TC Loudspeakers & Headphones
1. Will engage the TC on Loudspeakers & Headphones to participate in AES-X129 distortion perception.
2. Will issue a 'call for information' to TC on Loudspeakers & Headphones on "flat panel loudspeakers".

New Projects

No new projects were proposed

New Business

Call for information on flat panel loudspeakers - exploratory only at this point.

The next meeting will be held in conjunction with the AES 128th Convention in London, 2010-05.
