SC-05-05 meeting report, Munich, 2009-09

Report of the meeting of SC-05-05 (Working Group on Grounding and EMC Practices of the SC-05 Subcommittee on Interconnections) held in conjunction with the AES 126th Convention in Munich, Germany 2009-05-09.

The meeting was convened by chair B.C. Olson.

The agenda was amended to include the recently-published AES 54-1, -2, -3 standards and agreed as amended. The report of the previous meeting, 2008-10-02, was accepted as written.

Open Projects

AES48-R: Review of AES48-2005, AES standard on interconnections - Grounding and EMC practices - Shields of connectors in audio equipment containing active circuitry
Status: Plan to reaffirm in 2009-10 unless a proposal for revision is received.
Discussion: This is a call for any revision to the standard must be made immediately, as otherwise it will be recommended for reaffirmation at the next meeting of SC-05-05.

AES54-1-2008, Connection of cable shields within connectors attached to portable balanced audio cables
Status: No action requested or required

AES54-2-2008 Shields of balanced audio wiring within fixed and portable passive connector panels, jack fields, and passive microphone splitters
Status: No action requested or required

AES54-3-2008 Shields of balanced microphone-level outputs of active equipment other than microphones
Status: No action requested or required

Development Projects

AES-X125: Input filtering for electromagnetic compatibility
Project scope: To describe and explain the techniques that have been found to be practicable and effective for RF filtering.

  • B. Whitlock will provide a suitable figure for the definitions.
  • J. Woodgate will provide a table that will be used to guide the organization of the document regarding wanted vs. unwanted signals
  • M. Yonge to post revised document with the changes made at the meeting

The working group needs to review and add to the document based on the framework in the table that has been provided by Woodgate.

AES-X152: Signal levels and impedances of analog audio interfaces
Project scope: To develop a standard for signal levels and circuit impedances of audio system components and for the specification of these quantities in product data sheets

Discussion: The integration of the two documents has proved more difficult than expected. Because there is a proposal for maintenance of IEC 61938 initiated by a project in SC-04-04, Woodgate will propose a revision for the WG to consider proposing to the IEC. The intent is to add an additional clause for professional audio to the interface sections for mic- and line-level signals.

Liaisons:

No new liaison issues.

New projects:

A new project is proposed for balanced audio on UTP by H. Jahne. Awaiting PIR.

New business:

There was no new business.

The next meeting will be scheduled in conjunction with the AES 126th Convention in New York City, NY, 2009-10.
