SC-03-06 meeting, Munich, 2009-05

Report of the meeting of the SC-03-06 Working Group on Digital Library and Archive Systems of the SC-03 Subcommittee on the Preservation and Restoration of Audio Recording held in Munich, Germany, 2009-05-09.

The meeting was convened by SC-03 chair C. Chambers.

The agenda and the report of the previous meeting, 2008-10-03, were accepted as written.

AES-X098B: Audio object structures for preservation and restoration
Scope: To collect information on all metadata issues pertaining to digital audio objects and all aspects of the digital documentation of digital audio objects. This scope includes field structures to describe and provide access to the audio content contained in digital files. It includes transfer, preservation and restoration information.

Current status: Sec revised draft as soon as possible
Project intent: Standard; Initiated: 1999-12; Target completion: 2009
Current goal: PWD; Target date for goal: 2009-11

It was noted from the last report that this project is due for PWD by October 2009 and is otherwise close to completion. It was noted that the loudness metadata being discussed as a part of a revision of AES41 may have an impact on the longer term requirements but the meeting agreed that this could be added at a later date either as a separate document of as an amendment.

Similarly, Dolby Laboratories has published an audio metadata chunk extension to the Wave file format that may also require review for this document. Version 1.0.0.6 of this document can be found of the FTP site so that comparisons can be made with the AES-X098B schema. It was of concern to the meeting that the metadata in this document was not divergent with the contents of AES-X098B and it was hoped that D. Ackerman would be able to cover this issue before the October meeting.

AES-X098C: Administrative metadata for audio objects - Process history schema
Scope: To collect information on all metadata issues pertaining to digital audio objects and all aspects of the digital documentation of digital audio objects. This scope includes field structures to describe and provide access to the audio content contained in digital files. It includes transfer, preservation and restoration information.

Current status: Sec revised draft ASAP
Project intent:Standard; Initiated: 1999-12; Target completion: 2010
Current goal: PWD; Target date for goal: 2009-11

It was noted and agreed by those present that the EBU may be interested in studying this process schema document. It was hoped that the EBU could discuss and comment of this document in the next P/META meeting in June. As reported last meeting, the abstract still requires completion but the body of the document is in a useful level of completion. It was agreed that this area of workflow and process history is becoming more important in business process management in the future. For clarity the latest file name at this time is:

A discussion ensued on the issues around mapping of metadata sets between different publications. The report published as AES-R9 by the AES last year was used to help clarify how this should be tackled. It was recommended that anyone interested in this issue should read AES R9-2008.

AES-X155: AES standard for audio metadata - Production recording metadata set (iXML)

Current status: Task group to produce PTD.
Project intent: Standard; Initiated: 2006-01; Target completion: 2009
Current goal: PTD; Target date for goal: 2008-10

This is the project proposing to standardise the iXML chunk produced by members of the Institute of Broadcast sound to enable the transfer of a normalised set of metadata during the exchange of media through the production process. iXML is already supported by a number of products already on the market.

It was noted that the task group members have not been able to progress this currently but it is hoped that work can progress over the coming 12 months. For all those interested in studying this proposal, document X155-IBS-draft-080415.doc is available on the FTP site.

A question was raised as to why this project was placed into this group rather than SC-03-07 and this will be reviewed and reported on at the next meeting.
