Development Projects

AES-X106 Styli shape and size for transfer of records
Although we have a excellent skeleton to work on, see the document upload section, no progress has been made. Our Austrian members have agreed to seek the aid of F. Lechleitner to help move the project along. It was also suggested that we would approach P. Copeland to ask for his input the project, at least to the point where we could re-use relevant parts of his unpublished work on transfer technologies. R. Ranft agreed to approach Copeland.

It was suggested that since this so far has been a solely "European Project" that we will try to meet at the Tonmeistertagung in Leipzig, Germany, in November 2006.

AES-X064 Test methods and materials for archival mechanical media
S. Davis reported on the progress of the production of the Test Disc Set as it was approved by the Board of Governors last year.

Due to problems with the quality of the vinyl produced by the French production plant the pressing of coarse groove records both in Holland and England is on hold. The vinyl gives rise to a huge amount of non-fills, far more than can be accepted for quality recordings.

The factories work hard to resolve the problem, and as soon as it is solved the Test Disc Set will go into production, hopefully well in time for the next AES Convention in October.
