SC-02-08 meeting, New York, NY, USA, 2019-10

Report of the meeting of the SC-02-08 Working Group on audio file transfer and exchange of the SC-02 Subcommittee on Digital Audio, held in New York, NY, USA, 2019-10-17.

The meeting was convened remotely by Mark Yonge.

The formal notice on patent policy was read.

The agenda and the report of the previous meeting, held in Dublin, Ireland, 2019-03-22 were approved as written.

In attendence were M Yonge*, U Henry*, P Treleaven*, R Kessler*, S Norcross, C van Winkle, T Fitzjarrald, R Cabot (* denotes by electronic link).

Projects assigned to this group but not mentioned here had no action requested or required - see www.aes.org/standards/meetings/project-status.cfm for details.

Open Projects

AES31-2-R Review of AES31-2-2012 Audio-file transfer and exchange - Part 2: File Format for Transferring Digital Audio Data Between Systems of Different Type and Manufacture
No action requested or required.

AES31-3-R Review of AES31-3-2008 (r2013), AES standard for network and file transfer of audio - Audio-file transfer and exchange - Part 3: Simple project interchange. including maintenance of annex F.
An amendment to AES31-3 was discussed. This includes a revised annex F that specifies a SMPTE Universal Label to be used in clause 6.3.1.1 "ADL version header" to identify an audio decision list (ADL).

The SMPTE Universal Label identified in the proposed Annex F.2 was requested of SMPTE on 2019-08-15 as a Leaf in the metadata dictionary for 'Audio edit decision list (ADL) defined in AES31-3'.

At the same time we requested a Node in the metadata dictionary for 'File exchange metadata defined in AES standards'. This means that further file-exchange labels can be generated more easily in the future.

In discussion it was noted that the Label was missing a byte of the AES Class 13 registration - this will be corrected.

R. Cabot expressed a preference for revising the standard rather than issuing an amendment on the grounds that this would simplify the documentation for implementers, and this was agreed by the meeting.

It was noted that AES31-4 would also need to be updated to match this change to AES31-3. The chair will consider this.

AES69-R Review of AES69-2015: AES standard for file exchange - Spatial acoustic data file format
This document is due for review by 2020. Any proposals for amendment or revision should be considered as soon as possible for completion in this timescale.

Liaisons

Scope: Adoption of AES31-2 as an IEC standard for broadcast wave format file, with addition of optional UBXT chunk to carry international character sets.

Publication of the International Standard is expected in November.

New
Cabot mentioned that we have been approached by DDEX with an intent to develop an AES liaison. It was mentioned that their work could benefit from using AES31-2.
