SC-05-02 meeting, Dublin, 2019-3

Report of the meeting of the SC-05-02 Working Group on Audio Connectors of the SC-05 Subcommittee on Interconnections, held in Dublin, Ireland, 2019-03-21

The meeting was convened at 9:00 by acting chair Bruce Olson.

In attendance were M Law, J Woodgate, P Treleaven, B Olson, R Cabot, J Britto, A Kuzub by remote link.

The formal notice on patent policy was read.

The meeting agenda was accepted as written.

Minutes of previous meeting in New York, 2019-10-20 were approved.

Open projects

AES68-R Review of AES68-2014 - AES standard for audio connectors - XL Connectors to Improve Electromagnetic Compatibility

This project must be revised or reaffirmed this year.

The chair asked if anyone had changes, hearing none the document will be balloted for reaffirmation.

Development projects

AES-X246 – Application of 8P8C data connector (RJ45 type) and quad twisted-pair cable for audio interconnections
The chair noted that the document has been published for comment as AES72. Comments close on 2019/3/29. At the request of Mike Law, Anthony Kuzub walked through the various diagrams on the working group document repository. The chair opened the AES Standards web site on the monitor in the meeting room and going through the comments received to date. The comments all have replies and the posts will remain online after the standard is published.

The committee agreed to consider making shielded cable a requirement in a revised version of the standard. There was also discussion of a future standard recommending a specific pinout.

New projects

Anthony Kuzub raised the question of grounding recommendations in AES59, is this a topic for this group or for SC-05-05? The Secretary reviewed the history of Anthony's submission. After some discussion it was decided to consider this topic within SC-05-05 as part of AES48 with a reference to it in AES59.

The next meeting will be scheduled in conjunction with the AES 147th Convention, to be held October 2019 in New York, NY US.
