Summary

This week we heard from our own AES officers Drew Hooke and Brett Boland. The focus of this session was to present basic mixing tools in Logic as well as compression techniques in Protools and various other DAWs.

Brett brought in a recording of a black metal band he's been working on in Logic and discussed the basic functions of the DAW and how to maneuver quickly in this environment. He talked in great detail about flex time showing us how long you can stretch a cymbal crash before the audio distorts significantly.

Drew brought in some listening examples of a pop/dance project he's working on that exemplified compression. We talked about ducking, bus compression, and common uses for these tools and how to implement them to get particular sonic elements to pop in your mix.
