Summary

This session will be on the subject of Electromagnetic Interference in AV systems. Phil will present his paper " An Introduction to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) for the Audio System Designer" published in the Journal of the AES in July of 1989. As the physics have not changed these basics still apply today and are still useful. Phil will also discuss the isolated star ground system (as presented in his out of print book "Audio Systems Design and Installation") and how more recent designs have evolved. Examples of real world technical design will be discussed.

Philip Giddings, P.Eng., is founder and President of Engineering Harmonics Inc., an international design firm based in Toronto. Since 1988, the firm has specialized in audio, video and control systems for public spaces that include performing arts centers, sports facilities and legislative, judicial and institutional buildings. Mr. Giddings is the author of the engineering text "Audio Systems Design and Installation", by Focal Press, as well as many technical papers and trade articles. He is an electrical engineering graduate from McGill University in Montreal and has been a Registered Professional Engineer for over 27 years.
