Summary

Each semester, the MTSU AES gives its members the opportunity to have their rough mixes evaluated by a panel of professors a few weeks before final projects are due. The timing of the critique allows the students time to return to the studio and put the faculty's advice to use. Members submit their rough mixes on CD, and then all panelists and members in attendance listen via a headphone distribution system. The event is not only good for the students who's mix is evaluated, but is an opportunity for all members in attendance to learn what to listen for when mixing. Interesting highlights from this semester's critique include suggestions on fully achieving a nasty, "lo-fi" sound, goals when mixing for the metal genre, and recording firecracker explosions for use as snare drum replacement sounds.
