Summary

The meeting started off at 8:03 PM with Jeff Thomas greeting and
announcing he would be doing a presentation about Sub-kicks that wouldn't take a lot of
time. Giving a quick history he relayed how the first one was rewired and used for the
Beatles. Then he gave a brief run through about the main components and how it is like
a dynamic moving coil mic with a bigger diaphragm and more weight. Miking on the kick
head gives you more low end without the need to create a tunnel for a clean sound, the
high end doesn't have enough energy. How he builds his subkick is by finding a speaker
that he doesn't need to roll off a lot. 8'' subwoofer with dual voice coils wired in parallel,
with a decent drummer you don't even need a mic pre. He gave an example of how a
subkick brings out the rumble and punch that makes the kick richer than when you just
mic inside and only get the hit. He added that you can use it to record a bass amp and
get some growl and how he just used it to mic a guitar amp for a clinic in class just to
hear what it would sound like. He showed us what adding the subkick added to the mix
by bringing in a little of the subkick because you don't want a lot of low end on guitar. He
then led into talking about how the build would be quick because he did the hard part of
the wood work. He uses unboxed because it sounds better and keeps its directionality
to focus on the front of the kick while being tight. He then answered questions about
speaker size. It was announced that the build will take place on June 9th for $125. The
meeting disbanded at 8:35pm with a lot of excitement for the build. The sign up was
decided to be put up on CRASconnect.
