Summary

The meeting and general assembly of the AES Austrain Section took place in the premises of the new building of AKG Acoustics GmbH in Vienna. Peter Tiefenthaler and his team explained the basic principles of active noise cancelling, based on feed-forward or feed-back systems. Acoustic aspects, as well as topics like user comfort, battery life and the continuous play function (passive functionality of the headphones even without battery power) were discussed. The presentation showed impressively, how efficient analogue filters can be designed for effective noise cancelling applications.

After the theoretical part, the audience had the chance to evaluate three different headphone types and technologies (feed-forward, feed-back and a combined system) under realistic noise conditions: two loudspeakers filled the room with simulated cockpit noise, and the effectiveness of the noise cancelling devices was demonstrated.

Besides the demonstrations, which were accompanied by a buffet generously sponsored by AKG Acoustics GmbH, the participants had the chance to visit the testing laboratory, where each single headphone set is individually calibrated and measured. Staff members were patiently answering the questions and provided further information on the recent developments.
