Summary

AES WORKSHOP | RECORDING MEMORIOUSLY
By Martín Díaz Vélez

This seminar approached the computer side in the audio chain, explaining basic concepts of interconectivity inside a motherboard, the elements within the computer that are involved when doing a recording, and the path the digital signal follows from sound card to hard disk drive.
Concepts in I/O and bandwidth were discussed, as were the ways in which RAM memory and HDD buffer will influence latency for recording and reproducing audio.
Theory was put to test in a 16-channel ProTools session, monitoring how the performance for the HDD drive, the RAM memory and the processor would drift as changes in the audio tracks were introduced.
Martín offered a few quick solutions for the latency problem thru the proper configuration of the ASIO driver or the use of RAM, SSD and Msata drives.
