Summary

At tonights meeting CRAS AES Student Chapter enjoyed a showing of Dave Grohl's, Sound City. Sound City is a documentary about Sound City recording studio in LA, where many major bands have recorded over the years. Some of the biggest names to record there are: Rick Springfield, Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Santana, Tom Petty, Elton John, The Grateful Dead, and Johnny Cash. The studio was not the most "clean" but it held dear to those who recorded at it. Sound City at the time had a 1 of a kind Neve custom console, that could create some of the best sounding drums in its environment. The studio recorded albums from the 70's through the 2000's, recording award winning albums and gaining its respect in the industry. Not long after the rise of digital consoles, Sound City became outdated and eventually was sold off. Dave Grohl, having recorded there in his youth with Nirvana, bought their Neve console so that it would continue to be used. This kindled his idea to create a documentary, telling the story of Sound City and it's impact on the music industry. In the making of this documentary Dave gathered up a few of the greats that recorded on this console over the years, to make one last record. The journey of the studio and console was very inspiring to students.
