Staying (somewhat) Sane in Insane Places

Details Below

This is a Zoom-only meeting.

The virtual doors open at 5:30PM.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the most recorded ensembles in American history. There have been many articles and descriptions of this history of BSO recordings over the years, (BSO | Koussevitzky on Microphone: Over the Airwaves and On Record), and the acoustic quality of Boston Symphony Hall is unexcelled.

In recent years, the BSO has undertaken a project to fully realize its audio and video recording capabilities. This has included a fully revised control room space as well as a technical infrastructure which is of industry standard. These upgrades corresponded with the appointment of Andris Nelsons as Music Director in 2014. Maestro Nelsons was enthusiastic when approached regarding recording projects, and suggested a Shostakovich symphony as an initial recording. This proved quite successful and allowed for an extended Shostakovich cycle to include all Symphonies, Concerti and the Opera 'Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk'.

This presentation will describe the current recording process as well as the technical capabilities at Symphony Hall.

Our Presenters

Shawn Murphy has recorded and mixed over four hundred-fifty feature films during a forty+ year career. With degrees from San Francisco State University (B.A.) and Stanford University (M.F.A.) Mr. Murphy has worked variously in Live Sound Production and Mixing, Radio, Television, and Theatrical Sound and Technical Direction. Additionally, Mr. Murphy acts as consultant for the Pacific Symphony, Boston Symphony, San Diego Symphony and Chicago Symphony Orchestras in the areas of audio recording, production and reinforcement. He has received an Academy Award, Grammy Awards and Emmy Award for his work in sound production and recording.

Nick Squire is a Grammy award-winning recording engineer based in Boston, MA. In his current position as the Lead Recording Engineer at the Boston Symphony, he works with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, and Boston Symphony Chamber Players, among others. He earned his Bachelor of Music in percussion performance at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and his Master of Music in sound recording at McGill University. When not at Symphony Hall or Tanglewood, Mr. Squire can be found working with independent musical groups around Boston, cycling, or reading up on the latest NASA news.

Notice of Elections

In June, our section will hold its annual business meeting. If there are administrative things to be decided, this is when the voting takes place. This year, the only concerns are the elections of Officers and Committee persons.

If you want to participate in the operation of your Section, this is your opportunity to step forward. Officers are generally nominated from persons serving on the Committee. The Committee produces the meeting content that occurs during the year. Officers and Committee terms are two years per position. The Committee positions elect every other year; odd numbered seats in odd years, even numbered seats in even years. This greatly aids continuity across years.

To serve in either capacity, you must be a full or associate member. If you aren't currently a member, and are elected to a position, you may join after-the-fact. Serving obligates you to producing at most one meeting per year. There are 10 committee seats, and there are (roughly) 10 months each year when we are holding meetings.

Nominations for any open positions are open now, and you may self-nominate. This year, we are electing for the following open positions:

  • Vice Chair
  • two Committee positions

Please contact Dan Mortensen, Chair, or any other officer or Committee person to get things started. If you have questions, feel free to contact any Section Person.

Mid April Update

Jess Berg has volunteered to run for the Vice-Chair position.
Bob Smith, current Vice-Chair will remain active as a Technical Contributer
The state of the Committee is:

Seat 2: Luke Pacholski
Seat 3: Open. Was Jess' seat, 1 year term
Seat 4: Open. Was Aaron's seat
Seat 6: Michael Ashton (Was Tom Stiles' seat)
Seat 8: Jim Rondinelli
Seat 10: jj Johnston

Bio sketches will be published in mid-may. The election will be held at the June meeting.
