Job Description:

Bowers & Wilkins is currently looking to recruit a Transducer Engineer at their Southwater Research & Engineering facility in West Sussex to help support research and development activities.

This role involves close collaboration with the Product Development teams and a wide and varied range of tasks which include acoustic, electrical and mechanical measurements, simulation and prototype building, reliability and end of line quality testing definition.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Transducer design (excluding CAD work)
  • Transducer component design (excluding CAD work)
  • Support to transducer manufacturing sites in terms of assembling processes and quality control supervision
  • Development of new simulation and measurement methods with the aim of improving speed of delivery, simulation accuracy and sonic performance
  • Support of other B&W teams on measurement techniques and measurement specifications
  • Ensure effective knowledge transfer of all results to the rest of the R&D team through presentations
  • Attend academic conferences and audio sector exhibitions
  • Perform any other technical duties as assigned
  • Occasional travel to the Chinese plant based in Zhuhai and to other Sound United / Bowers & Wilkins sites.

Specific tasks, either individually or as a team include:

  • Finite element simulation and analytical modelling of components or assemblies (electromagnetic, mechanical, or acoustics)
  • Measurements of transducer loudspeaker assemblies using the Klippel system and other systems currently available at B&W
  • Document the results of the above activities, including the creation of working procedures and design guidelines
  • Implementation of design processes and testing procedures for transducer components
  • Competitor products evaluation
  • Provide support on assembling processes (jig design, glue choice, online subassembly quality control definition, etc.)
  • Provide support on quality assurance processes (end of line testing, power tests, and other reliability tests), equipment choice, drive unit fault finding

Requirements:

Essential:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in acoustics, physics, mechanical or electronics engineering
  • Understanding of physical principles of electrodynamic transducers, including non-linear effects   
  • Familiar with COMSOL finite element package (or equivalent)
  • Working knowledge of the Klippel R&D system
  • Experienced in transducer components and assemblies manufacturing processes
  • Understanding of the basic principle of sound radiation and room acoustics
  • Skills in a technical computing language like MATLAB or equivalents

Desirable:

  • Specific experience with headphone and micro-transducers
  • Working knowledge of the Klippel QC system and Rub&Buzz phenomena and their root cause analysis
  • Working knowledge of a 3D design package like Solidworks, NX, Catia
  • Hands on experience with measurement systems such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, acoustic testing systems using stepped sine, chirp/logsweep or MLS signals
  • Familiar with DFMA, DFMEA, FMEA
