Main Purpose Of The Job

  • Working as part of the ‘Active Product Development Team’ – This Lead DSP Engineer is responsible for all aspects of active product development in both loudspeakers, hi-fi components and headphones; overseeing Industrial design, Mechanical design, Acoustics, Transducer design, EE, DSP etc. right through to manufacturing.
  • This role is to lead the existing team of DSP engineers that services these product lines. The Lead DSP Engineer requires a cross-discipline engineering skillset covering both software and hardware research and development and people management.

The Main Goals Of The Role Are To:

  • Develop DSP algorithms, embedded DSP code, tools, and processes for use in live projects.
  • Design, maintain and implement core audio DSP algorithms and control software.
  • Confirm and ensure QoS of the inter-chip communication (i2c, i2s TDM, etc.) at numerous hardware build stages throughout a project cycle.
  • Articulate long-term technology strategy for signal processing in collaboration with other critical teams.
  • Managing and defining research objectives within the team. Managing DSP deployment with business development partners (e.g. Automotive, TVs, etc.).Presenting research to wider teams. Outlining and conducting research projects. Researching DSP improvements for all areas of the business.
  • Track and organise workload of the DSP engineers in the team, contributing to Design, test & release DSP code for integration in products. Design individual/custom processing functions & algorithms (filters, dynamic processing, etc.).Work with the wider team to investigate new algorithms and architectures. The long-term signal processing R&D strategy. Develop & maintain coding strategies, internal standards & procedures in collaboration with the wider team

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead DSP engineering team – Track & organize workload of the DSP engineers, sharing knowledge and expertise. Assisting with the duties of the DSP engineering teams including hardware testing, software releases, and algorithm development.
  • Algorithm Development - The Lead DSP engineer is responsible for the research and development of new algorithms into the development process, this may be either from self-driven research or as part of a wider research project.
  • Systems improvement – The Lead DSP engineer (in conjunction with the DSP engineers) is responsible for continuously reviewing and refining standards, testing procedures, and deliverables.
  • Hardware selection – The Lead DSP engineer is responsible for supporting the hardware, consulting about design decisions and best practices.

Travel - some of these duties will involve travel to support a world-wide team and external suppliers.

Knowledge - Stay up to date in the field through courses and conferences.

Essential requirements:

  • Bachelors/Masters degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the audio industry.
  • Knowledge of audio signal processing with theoretical and real-time DSP experience.
  • Understanding of DSP theory: Filtering, sampling, crossover design & dynamic signal processing, etc.
  • Experience designing, developing, maintaining and debugging signal processing algorithms.
  • Experience with assembly language for real-time audio processing.
  • Experience with Embedded DSP code (Assembly, C)
  • Experience with prototyping and scripting languages (MATLAB, Python, Bash)
  • Experience operating electronic test equipment such as audio analyzers, oscilloscopes, multimeters, etc.
  • People management experience

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a Linux or Unix development environment.
  • Ability to read and understand electronics schematics and layouts.
  • Familiarity with real-time audio prototyping tools such as Max/MSP.
  • Familiarity with sound recording/editing software tools, audio measurement tools.
  • Experience of software version control: Git, SVN.
