Multichannel audio for surround loudspeaker setups is a common technology, and it is also being implemented in digital broadcasting. Recent research has looked at the reproduction of 3-D spatial audio for 3-D loudspeaker layouts and for headphone playback. However, some technological challenges still remain in capturing, coding, transmitting, and reproducing spatial audio. If you care about spatial audio and are involved in its various applications, you cannot afford to miss the AES 40th International Conference on Spatial Audio to be held October 8-10 in Tokyo. This conference, chaired by Toru Kamekawa and Kimio Hamasaki, will focus on the latest advances in spatial audio including techniques for conventional channel-based surround setups, object-based setups, and for binaural listening.
Kazuho Ono and Thomas Sporer, papers cochairs, and their review committee had the difficult task of assessing a huge number (70) of proposed papers. They have planned papers sessions based on the following topics: perception and evaluation of spatial audio, spatial rendering and reproduction, surround sound with height, coding for spatial audio, applications of spatial audio, microphones and mixing techniques, 3-D sound, spatialization and reverberation, and monitoring of surround sound. In addition, there will be three keynote addresses. The first, ``History and Current State of the War between the Two Main Approaches to Surround Sound: Discrete Loudspeaker Feeds versus Hierarchical Matrix,' will be given by Angelo Farina on Friday morning. On Saturday morning, Yoiti Suzuki will give the second keynote address, ``Auditory Displays and Microphone Arrays for Active Listening.' And the third keynote address, ``The Concept of Space in Contemporary Music,' will be given on Sunday morning by Mikako Mizuno.
Kazutsugu Uchimura and Florian Camerer, workshop cochairs, have planned eleven workshops: Periphony—More Than Just Over Your Head; Measuring High-Quality Room Impulse Responses for Artistic Application; Space Builder—A Comprehensive Production Tool for 22.2-Channel Sound Design; Current State of 3-D Sound; Surround Recording for Music; New Theoretical Model of Soundfield Diffusion; Mixing with Perspective; The Art and Practice of Multichannel Field Recording; New Spatial Audio Coding Methods Based on Time-Frequency Processing; The Importance of the Direct-to-Reverberant Ratio in the Perception of Distance, Localization, Clarity, and Envelopment; and In Pursuit of Spatialized Sound in Games. In addition the conference committee has scheduled a special preconference workshop, ``Anatomy of 3-D Technology,' on Thursday, October 7.
The preconference workshop on Thursday and the technical events on Saturday and Sunday will be held at the Tokyo University of the Arts, which has recording studios and listening rooms equipped with 5.1 channel sound facilities.
The technical events on Friday will be held at NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories, which has theaters and listening rooms equipped with three-dimensional sound facilities and Super Hi-Vision video facilities. These venues and the hotel options are all located in central Tokyo.
On Friday evening there will be two special events: a demonstration of Super Hi-Vision and 22.2 multichannel sound followed by a concert with traditional Japanese music. The conference banquet on Saturday evening will be a dinner cruise in Tokyo Bay on a Japanese houseboat. On Sunday there will be a special lunchtime concert featuring live piano played with surround nature recordings played on surround sound loudspeakers. For attendees who can schedule a few extra days before or after the conference, the committee is working with a tour operator to offer optional 1-, 2-, or 3-day visits to Kyoto, famous for its temples and shrines.
