Michael Smithers received a B.E. in electrical engineering from the University of Wollongong, Australia, in 1997, majoring in signal processing. From 1997 to 1999 he worked Motorola Labs, Sydney, in low bit-rate speech coding, speech recognition and speaker verification. In 2000 he joined the Sound Technology research group at Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco and worked in perceptual audio coding, audio watermarking, perceptual loudness measurement and processing, automotive audio and cinema sound. In 2006 he joined Dolby’s Sydney office, continuing research in audio post processing and technologies for the Dolby Atmos cinema and consumer object based audio systems.

Michael holds various patents in signal processing and loudspeaker designs. He is a member of the AES and has published in the AES and IEEE. His currently research areas include electroacoustics, loudspeaker designs and loudspeaker/room interactions, and his interests include loudspeaker design and live sound reinforcement.
