Niels Rump

Primary Affiliation: Digital Data Exchange (DDEX) - Global

Niels Rump has worked in the digital music space for the last 20 years. Initially at Fraunhofer IIS (the “home of MP3”), he developed one of the first commercial Digital Rights Management systems. During his time at Fraunhofer, Niels started working in standards-setting bodies (including MPEG, AES SC and, now, DDEX) where he helped to move the focus of the discussion from DRM towards metadata and rights management issues. During this time, Niels served as secretary to AES SC-06-04, AES’ standards committee on Digital Music Distribution, as well as the chair of the Functional Requirements Working Group of the Secure Digital Music Initiative.

Since 2001, Niels has been a Senior Consultant with Rightscom Limited, where he supports clients, predominantly in the music industry, on metadata and rights management issues.

One part of his responsibilities at Rightscom is to support the Digital Data Exchange (DDEX), where he co-ordinates the technical development of the various standards. These standards have been proven as enablers to an increasingly efficient flow of information across the music supply chain. As such, Niels plays an active role in shaping the future of the music industry.
