The 137th Audio Engineering Society Convention to Feature Popular Project Studio Expo

The 137th Audio Engineering Society Convention to Feature Popular Project Studio Expo

— Presented in association with leading recording technology publication Sound On Sound, the Project Studio Expo is intended to give home recordists a new perspective on how they can better use their tools and their ears —

The 137th Audio Engineering Society Convention, scheduled for Thursday, October 9, through Sunday, October 12, 2014, at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California, will play host the popular Project Studio Expo, (PSE) presented in association with Sound On Sound. The Project Studio Expo, included with admission to holders of the Free Exhibits-Plus badge, will feature presentations by leading industry engineers, producers, authors, journalists and educators, including Alex Case, Mike Senior, Stephen Webber, Larry Crane, Craig Anderton, Mick Guzauski, John Storyk, Paul White, Hugh Robjohns, and others. Presenters will lead attendees through basics such as recording vocals, preparing multitracks for mixing and best practices for proper monitoring, as well as more detailed discussions on how to optimize value when it comes to choosing and purchasing equipment, how to design a great project studio, and how to get the most out of a digital audio workstation. The Project Studio Expo will take place Friday, October 10, and Saturday, October 11, throughout show hours. Sponsors for the PSE at the 137th AES Convention include Audionamix, Avid, Focusrite Novation, Sennheiser, and Universal Audio.

The PSE also features a variety of events covering some of the more practical, yet often overlooked, aspects of personal and project studio recording space and workflow. One example is a two-session program entitled “Listen Up and Learn!,” led by Stephen Webber of Berklee College of Music and Alex Case of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where attendees will get an up-close view into how experienced audio engineers break down what they hear, empowering attendees to keep learning whenever them listen, and inspiring them to approach their own work in new ways.

The PSE will also play host to sessions such as “The Five Most Common Project Studio Recording Mistakes" which will be specifically tailored to those working on a budget and will feature insider tips on equipment choice, mic technique and session psychology, with plenty of supporting audio examples so you can judge the results with your own ears. "How To Make Amp Sims Sound Totally Fabulous” is a must for guitarists and their engineers, and “The Importance of a Reference Monitoring Level" will help bring additional technical discipline to the project studio recording environment.

“There has been tremendous response to our Project Studio Expo over the past two Conventions, and we are putting together an even more comprehensive set of events this time,” states Bob Moses, AES Executive Director. “With the help of our partners and sponsors we have seen the PSE grow into a program that really offers something for everyone in the audio community. I feel this serves as a real incubator and inspiration for seasoned professionals as well as those who are attending an AES event for the first time. These are top-notch educators and engineers who are giving as close to a one-on-one dialog as you can get. And to have this included as part of our free Exhibits-Plus badge offerings is really a great way to expand the mission of the AES – to educate and provide support to those audio engineers that play a large part in our audible world.”
