Panelists: Chris Boyes, Skywalker Sound; Ann Kroeber The Kroeber Sound Company; Saul Zaentz, Film Center; Doug Quin, Wild Sanctuary; and Kathy Turko, Alaska's Spirit Speaks, National Public Radio

Recording the sounds of nature presents a different set of challenges than working in a studio or stage. This workshop introduced the trials and tribulations of field recording. Speakers shared their wild recording adventures from around the world. Participants learned remote recording techniques and had an opportunity to get hands on training using the latest state of the art recording equipment.

Saturday, September 26, 2:00PM
W 2: Aesthetics of Mixing Music 5.1

Co-Chairman: Ted Hall, P.O.P. Studios, Santa Monica, CA, USA; Roger Wiersema, Music Annex, San Francisco, CA, USA
Panelists: Chuck Ainlay, Independent Engineer/Producer; Michael Bishop, Telare Records; John Eargle, JBL Professional; Akira Fukada, NHK; Jac Holzman, Warner Music Group; and Tom Jung, DMP Records

Just as the change from mono to stereo effected the aesthetics of recording, the advent of 5.1 is again changing the rules. Where do you position the listener in the mix? This workshop allowed participants to hear different styles of mixing. The future popularity of this format in home theater environments will be discussed.
