105TH AES CONVENTION TO PRESENT STRONG TECHNICAL PAPER LINEUP

SAN FRANCISCO: A powerful lineup of 120 technical papers will be presented at the 105th AES Convention, scheduled for September 26-29 at San Francisco's Moscone Convention Center, report convention co-chairs David Robinson and Valerie Tyler.

Each of the 16 paper sessions coordinated by Technical Papers chairman Brian Link will consist of two parallel presentations, designed to avoid overlapping themes. Two papers will be presented each morning, followed by two in the afternoon. The technical paper program will exemplify the convention's focus on emerging technologies, examining such topics as 5.1, multichannel sound, and desktop audio.

DESKTOP AUDIO
Saturday, September 26, 3:00 pm, chairman Rob Maher of EuPhonics will host Desktop Computer Audio. Papers such as "New Sound Technology for PCs" by Jeffrey Barish of EuPhonics, and "Integrating Audio and Communication" by Conrad Maxwell of Rockwell Semiconductor Systems will provide insight on the merging worlds of desktop and audio.

WINNING CONVERTS
Also on Saturday, September 26, 3:00 pm, Robert Adams of Analog Devices will chair Conversion Technology. New light will be shed on this key area of development with "Multiphase Filters for Sample-Rate Conversion of High-Resolution Audio" by Vicki R. Melchior of Sonic Solutions, and "Switching Circuit Network Topologies for Dynamic Element Matching Data Converters" by J.W. Bruce and Peter Stubberud of University of Nevada Las Vegas.

TESTING
The growing interest in Psychoacoustics, Perception, and Listening Tests, will be addressed by a panel on Sunday, September 27, 2:00 pm. Chaired by Sean Olive of Harman International, papers will include "Some Aspects of Audio-Visual Perception of Different Program Materials (Film, Video, and Multimedia)" by Nina Dvorko and Konstantin Ershov, Institute for Cinema and Television.

SOUND IN SPACE
An important two-part series, Spatial Perception and Processing, will kick off Monday, September 28, 9:00 am. Chairman Bill Gardner of Wave Arts hosts papers featuring "Pair-Wise Loudspeaker Paradigms for Multichannel Audio in Home Theater and Virtual Reality" by K.C.K. Foo and M.O.J. Hawksford, University of Essex, and M.P. Hollier of BT Labs. Part II follows Monday at 2:00 pm, and includes "Reproduction of Loudspeaker Listening Room Sound through Headphones: Measured Coherence Analysis, Cross Spectra, and Digital Filter Impulse Responses" by Victor B. Ganjian and Douglas Preis of Tufts University.

5.1 AND SURROUND
The emerging implications of 5.1 and surround will be the focus of one of the most important issues of the 105th Convention, Multichannel Sound, chaired by Tomlinson Holman of TMH Corporation, on Tuesday, September 29, 9:00 am. "Signal Characteristics of Matrix and Discrete Multichannel Recordings" by Eric Benjamin of Dolby Laboratories, will be followed by "Toward an Aesthetic in Mixing for Multichannel Music Presentation" by Doug Mitchell of Middle Tennessee State University.

"The Technical Papers selected for the 105th AES Convention cover some fascinating territory," says Brian Link. "This program was designed to highlight some of the most important new developments and issues in pro audio."

Formed in 1948 by a group of concerned audio engineers, the AES counts over 12,000 members throughout U.S., Europe, Japan and the Far East, and serves as the pivotal force in the exchange and dissemination of technical information for the industry.
