Abstract: The paper deals comprehensively with the genesis of a idea to introduce digital mass-storage technology within radio sound archives. The advantages as well as disadvantages of this new application are described in detail. The paper also reports on the expense of the transfer of archival material into the digital domain, which will consist in the future not only of sound but also of text, graphics, and still or moving images. Finally, the future possibilities of this new technology for archival purposes are explored.
