Abstract: The promise of digital audio based on its singular advantages in the areas of permanence and fidelity are presented. Emphasis is placed on considering digital recording as a new medium, not just a new technology. Detailed aspects of the points of advantage will be disclosed. To provide balance, disadvantages, most of which will be overcome with time, will also be reviewed. The final part of the paper includes an elementary discussion of several aspects of digital recording and transmission.
