Abstract: The aim of this research is to examine the differences in the timbre of organ pipes’ sound between a historical and a contemporary organ instrument. The historical instrument is the Oliwa organ from Gdansk, Poland, and the contemporary one is from Kartuzy, Poland. Recordings are made of single notes played by an open labial pipe that belongs to the Principal rank. The analyses and comparison of several sound features compatible with audio descriptors defined in MPEG-7 standard are performed in the MATLAB environment. The influence of the distance between the microphone and the sound source on sound features is also examined, in order to judge whether the comb filter appears in close distances from the sound source.
