The Technical Council coordinates the activities and policies of the Technical Committees, advises the Board of Governors by formal resolutions on matters of policy involving technical considerations, and serves as a liaison body for technical contacts and exchange between groups in the Society and those of other organizations with similar or related interests.
The Technical Council and its Technical Committees respond to the interests of the membership by providing technical information at an appropriate level via conferences, conventions, workshops, and publications. They work on developing tutorial information of practical use to the members and concentrate on tracking and reporting the very latest advances in technologies and applications. Whenever possible, they assist papers chairs, and convention and conference chairs in preparing papers sessions and facilitate meaningful demonstrations of new technologies in order to increase the experiential awareness of our members. They also participate in building the heritage of the Society by acquiring historical materials related to audio.
The AES Technical Committees lead the Society's involvement in technical issues, and become a visible resource of knowledge and expertise. This repository of knowledge represents the Society to the outside world, and acts to benefit its members within the Society.
Using current telecommunications and Internet technology, the Technical Committees function as expert groups consisting of members who maintain a high level of interaction on an ongoing basis. A network structure established by the AES allows for technical activity to continue in between the AES conventions by providing a virtual forum for active discussion on technical, applied, and scientific matters.
Technical Committees strive to create and maintain awareness of problems, conditions, standards, etc., in the areas vital to the activities of the AES, so that valuable work is performed and is made known through special convention activities, print and network publications, as well as guest visits to local sections.
The work of the Technical Committees is disseminated to members as monographs, tutorial papers, articles published in the Journal of the Society, or on the AES website. The position of the Society on relevant issues is articulated in white papers, position papers, and other tools of communication.
As part of their mandate, Technical Committees work to identify important technical issues and recommend them to the Standards Committees for further exploration. In this respect Technical Committees work closely with the Standards Committees.
Technical Committees help build bridges to other societies and technical organizations through formal and informal activities that ensure flow of relevant information in both directions, thus nurturing collaboration in technical, scientific, and user-oriented matters.
