On December 4th, 1998, AES members John Strawn, Marina Bosi, and past president Elizabeth Cohen were invited to a meeting at the White House to speak on behalf of the AES about advanced networks for music and audio. At the meeting were: Tom Kalil, Senior Director to the National Economic Council Audrey Choi, Policy Advisor, Office of the Vice President Lori Perine, Senior Policy Advisor (DOC), Computing, Information, and Communications, Executive Office of the President Martha Livingstone, Consultant to White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Betsy Cohen opened the session by stating that the history of leaving scraps of bandwidth for audio should not be repeated. After a brief history of the decision-making process on bandwidth allocation in HDTV and DVD, she stated that the AES believed that preserving and creating pathways for high quality audio experiences is an essential part of all next-generation Internet initiatives. Marina Bosi continued with a presentation on the AES's work, goals, membership, standards work, discussing the areas of expertise of AES and the AES tradition of excellence in the art of sound. John Strawn presented certain aspects of the AES White Paper on Internet2, "Audio and Music using Internet2 and Next-Generation Internet Capabilities", and focused primarily on possible audio and music applications, including long-distance performance, mixing at large distances, and remote master classes. Tom Kalil said that he would like for audio and music departments at universities with access to Internet2 to be fully aware of the potential for research and collaboration. He wishes to locate such institutions to inform them about their Internet2 campus contacts, and to encourage them to start music and audio research over Internet2.
