Minutes of the AES Technical Committee on Archiving, Restoration and Digital Libraries Meeting at the 110th AES Convention, Amsterdam 13 May 2001 21 participants in attendance: Stefano Cavaglieri George Brock-Nannestad Jim Ocenaier Boris Nevraou Wolfgang Krafft Nadje Wallaszkovits Ted Sheldon W.A. Deutsch Wieslaw Woszczyk Siegbert Herla Michale Brod Bill Allen Lucy Launder Chris Buchanan Gordon Reid Anders Dramstad Carl Nilsson Lars Gaustad Franz Lechleitner Dietrich Schuller David Ackerman The Meeting was called to order by David Ackerman, TC co-chair. The group discussed the scope of the white paper we are charged with writing. It was noted that the mission is to "spread the gospel" to the AES membership. The issue of addressing cultural heritage was raised. The decision to not tackle this topic was agreed to without objection. It was noted that other organizations, better equipped to handle this topic, are already working on documents that address the issue and that we need not re-invent the wheel. The question of whether we should ask another group to write the white paper for us was raised. The discussion that followed pointed out the AES has more clout in the audio marketplace than many of the groups that could be asked to undertake the project. However, it was decided that where appropriate, our white paper should reference the work of others. The chairperson suggested that we continue with the topics of manpower, machine and media with the addition of metadata/management. Another suggestion was that we cover the structure of the body of work and the choices involved. The artifact has a function but also an information purpose. In the early stages restoration means repair of the artifact. Later, it becomes a matter of retaining as much of the information as possible. Additionally, attention must be paid to the secondary information, for source critical work. This includes background noise. It was pointed out that the archive cannot decide what is primary and what is secondary information without prescribing the use of the item. There was agreement that masters are more valued than use copies. We were alerted that IASA is working on "recommended Practice for Safeguarding the Audio Heritage" and that it should be ready in September. A writing team was formed: Dietrich Schuller George Brock-Nannestad Gordon Reid With David Ackerman as the chair. Ted Sheldon volunteered to assist Mr. Ackerman in the editing of the document. The writing team will periodically post their contributions to the list for comment. Mr Ackerman will work to integrate each persons contributions into a final document. The next meeting will be held at the NY AES Convention in September. It was suggested that we should also meet in October just before the Buddhapest AES meeting.
