Report of the meeting of the SC-05-05 Working Group on Grounding and EMC Practices of the SC-05 Subcommittee on Interconnections held in San Francisco, CA., USA., 2010-11-05.

The meeting was convened by chairman Bruce C. Olson.

The agenda and the report of the previous meeting, 2010-05-23, were accepted.

Open Projects

AES48-R: Review of AES48-2005, AES standard on interconnections - Grounding and EMC practices - Shields of connectors in audio equipment containing active circuitry
A CFC for reaffirmation of AES48-2005 was published 2010-04-06. There was no discussion at this meeting.

AES54-R: Review of:
AES54-1-2008, Connection of cable shields within connectors attached to portable balanced audio cables
AES54-2-2008, Shields of balanced audio wiring within fixed and portable passive connector panels, jack fields, and passive microphone splitters
AES54-3-2008, Shields of balanced microphone-level outputs of active equipment other than microphones

Status: No action was requested or required

Development Projects

AES-X125: Input filtering for electromagnetic compatibility
Project scope: To describe and explain the techniques that have been found to be practicable and effective for RF filtering.

Current goal: PWD, Goal date: 2010-02

There was much discussion as to the future direction of this project. J. Brown indicated that S. Macatee had agreed to do some writing. It was felt that if a draft is not available in a timely fashion, then this project should perhaps be moved under the auspices of TC-EMC.

[Chairman's note: Having spoken subsequently to Macatee, I now propose to retire this project. Any objections should be raised prior to 1 April 2011.]

AES-X152: Signal levels and impedances of analog audio interfaces
Project scope: To develop a standard for signal levels and circuit impedances of audio system components and for the specification of these quantities in product data sheets

Intent: Propose revisions to IEC for MT 61938, Target: 2009

Discussion: Previous comments have been proposed to 61938 MT. [Brown forwarded further comments on EMC issues in 61938 after the meeting to the reflector.]

The 1st COMMITTEE DRAFT of IEC 61938 has been posted to our document site. As further drafts are available they will also be posted to the document site. This will allow us to return to our original scope by having a document to refer to for our requirements of Data Sheets. The group should now move forward with the previously-started documents and incorporate references from the most current version of IEC 61938.

Once the Final Draft is available on IEC 61938 we should look at initiating a project to revise all EMC issues that need to be looked at. This would be work that we could propose as part of our liaison with IEC for the next maintenance cycle.
