SC-03-06 meeting, New York, 2009-10

Report of the meeting of the SC-03-06 Working Group on Digital Library and Archive Systems of the SC-03 Subcommittee on the Preservation and Restoration of Audio Recording, held in New York, NY., US, 2009-10-10

The meeting was convened by chair D. Ackerman.

The agenda and the report of the previous meeting, held on 2009-05-09 in Munich, were accepted as written.

Development projects

AES-X098B: Audio object structures for preservation and restoration
Scope: To collect information on all metadata issues pertaining to digital audio objects and all aspects of the digital documentation of digital audio objects. This scope includes field structures to describe and provide access to the audio content contained in digital files. It includes transfer, preservation and restoration information.
Current status: Modification of time elements, revised PWD ASAP
Project intent: Standard; Initiated: 1999-12; Target date for completion: 2008
Current goal: PWD; Target date for goal: 2009-12

The group worked to complete the draft of the document and recommended that the revised version be formatted for PWD ASAP.

In response to comments from M. Casey a "stockBrand" attribute was added for analog disc and cylinders and a numbering error was corrected within the document. It was decided that no need exists to indicate audio cassette tape type in light of the fact that equalization metadata is already available. The group decided that the file size for digital files was outside of the scope of this document.

In response to comments from the chair, the group decided to drop timecode character format (TCF) from the document and replace it with a new time type [based on a more direct sample count].

The above changes along with a forward for the document have been incorporated into a revised draft which has been given to the standards manager, who will insert the remaining diagrams onto the document and format for PWD.

AES-X098C: Administrative metadata for audio objects - Process history schema
Scope: To collect information on all metadata issues pertaining to digital audio objects and all aspects of the digital documentation of digital audio objects. This scope includes field structures to describe and provide access to the audio content contained in digital files. It includes transfer, preservation and restoration information.
Current status: Revised PWD expected
Project intent: Standard; Initiated: 1999-12; Target date for completion: 2008
Current goal: PWD; Target date for goal: 2010

The group briefly discussed the comments raised by Casey and Tormod Vaervaegen.

In response to comments from Vaervaegen, the group decided that the workerType should be replaced with the entity-type of X098A, with an ID-attribute extension.

In response to comments from Casey, several typographical errors were corrected. It was decided that we should use the xlink schema published by the Library of Congress. Discussion of an ADL xml implementation and its use in this standard was tabled for future discussion.

In response to comments from the chair, the group again decided to drop timecode character format (TCF) from the document and replace it with a new time type.

Ackerman will work up a revised draft of this document in time for the next meeting in London.

AES-X155: AES standard for audio metadata - Production recording metadata set (iXML)
Scope: This document specifies a format for communicating file- and project-based production metadata between various stages of production and post production workflow. It may also have utility in other areas. The format, iXML, uses the XML standard for communication of tagged metadata. The XML-formatted metadata may be written to a data chunk inside a Broadcast Wave file, such as AES31-2, or some other suitable file type. iXML standardises the interchange of production information, and provides an extensible framework to add new private or public data as needs develop, while permitting the specification to be expanded in a consistent and compatible manner. Current status: Task group to produce PTD
Project intent: Standard; Initiated: 2006-01; Target date for completion: 2009
Current goal: PTD; Target date for goal: 2009-12

It was reported that no new work had occurred on this project, but it was expected to resume in the near term.
