SC-03-01 meeting, San Francisco, 2008-10-04

Report of the meeting of Working group SC-03-01 on Analog Recording of the SC-03 Subcommittee on the Preservation and Restoration of Audio Recording. Meeting held at the AES 125th Convention in San Francisco, CA., US., 2008-10-04.

The meeting was convened by chair J. McKnight.

The agenda was agreed as written. The report from last meeting (2006-10, San Francisco) was approved.

Open Projects

AES-R2-R: Review of AES-R2-2004, AES project report for articles on professional audio and for equipment specifications - Notations for expressing levels
This document qualifies for "stabilized status" and the meeting recommended moving it to "stabilized status".

AES6-R: Review of AES6-1982 (r2003): Method for measurement of weighted peak flutter of sound recording and reproducing equipment
No comments have been received on the draft of 2008-07-31, and none were offered at this meeting. It is proposed that this draft be moved to PCFC status.

AES7-R: Review of AES7-2000 (r2005): AES standard for the preservation and restoration of audio recording - Method of measuring recorded fluxivity of magnetic sound records at medium wavelengths
This document also qualifies for "stabilized status", and we recommend doing so.

Liaisons

SC-03-02 has projects on mechanical disk recording, and we should keep in contact regarding measurements for mechanical disk recording (see below). E. Jacobs will be the liaison between SC-03-01 and SC-03-02.

New Projects

P. Gold observed that SC-03-02 has projects on mechanical disk recording, and he asked about the definition and measurement of "recorded groove velocity". McKnight mentioned that the IRE published a standard on measuring groove velocity in around the 1960s, which he will scan and send to the SC-03-01 document site for review.

This document is no longer supported by the IEEE. If it is appropriate for modern usage, it is hoped that IEEE can be persuaded to re-activate this document, or to grant AES permission to reproduce its content.

New Business

There was no new business.

The next meeting will be scheduled in conjunction with the 126th Convention, Munich, Germany, 2009-05.
