SC-05-05 meeting report, Amsterdam, 2008-05

Report of the meeting of SC-05-05 (Working Group on Grounding and EMC Practices of the SC-05 Subcommittee on Interconnections) held in conjunction with the AES 124th Convention in Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2008-05-17.

The meeting was convened by chair B. Olson.

The report of the previous meeting, held in Vienna, Austria 2007-05-05, and the agenda were approved as written (there was no meeting report from the New York meeting, 2007-10).

Open Projects

AES48-R Review of AES48-2005, AES standard on interconnections - Grounding and EMC practices - Shields of connectors in audio equipment containing active circuitry

This standard will come up for review in 2010. No action was requested or required at this time.

Development Projects

AES-X125 Input filtering for electromagnetic compatibility
Secretary to format the current draft as a PWD with any missing parts highlighted. The working group will then be expected to review and comment on the PWD.

AES-X147A Connection of cable shields within connectors attached to balanced audio cables
Woodgate suggested that the chair should revise the Scope and Abstract. Chair agreed to proceed immediately. JW also recommended that description information be included in an Annex for the CFC that is not to be included in the standard. A PCFC is then expected quickly after that from the secretariat.

AES-X147B Shielding of balanced audio wiring within passive connector panels and passive mic splitters
Woodgate suggested that the chair should revise the Scope and Abstract. Chair agreed to proceed immediately. A PCFC is then expected quickly after that from the secretariat.

AES-X147C Shields of microphone level outputs of active equipment other than microphones
Woodgate suggested that the chair should revise the Scope and Abstract. Chair agreed to proceed immediately. A PCFC is then expected quickly after that from the secretariat.

AES-X152 Signal levels and impedances of analog audio interfaces
Woodgate's AES-X152 document is what we have, but J. Brown's AES-X152 document is what we need.

Woodgate offered to merge Brown's document with his and generate the necessary tables to show the information more clearly. The working group will then be expected to review and comment on the PWD.

Liaisons

Woodgate updated the meeting on the latest initiatives in CISPR/I regarding CISPR 32 & 35 to define emission and immunity for EMC. CISPR/I WG4 (CISPR 35) have not met recently. CISPR/I WG2 (CISPR 32) has a new document that again has attracted a huge volume of comment.

The other project in difficulty is from CENELEC in updating EN55103-1 and -2. The circulation for voting has been delayed for many months. IEC TC210 meets next week which may prompt some action. They will at some future time be superseded by the CISPR standards, but it is unclear which will arrive first.

CISPR 35 uses a 'function-based' approach for immunity, and this may be difficult for CENELEC to adopt.

New projects

A project on AES48 and AES54 guidelines was proposed by R. Caine. This could be based on the tutorial material already written for AES-X013. It would reinforce the rationale for the use of the standards; how they connect together; and why the standard was written in this way.

New business

There was no new business

The next meeting will be scheduled to take place in conjunction with the AES 125th convention in San Francisco, CA., US., 2008-10.
