SC-05-02 meeting report, New York 2007-10

Report of the meeting of the SC-05-02 Working Group on Audio Connectors of the SC-05 Subcommittee on Interconnections, held in conjunction with the AES 122nd Convention in New York, NY., US., 2007-10-05

The meeting was convened by vice-chair R. Rayburn.

The agenda and the report of the previous meeting, held in Vienna 2007-05-05, were approved as written.

Open Projects

AES-R3-R: Review of AES-R3-2001: AES standards project report on single programme connector - Compatibility for patch panels of TRS Connectors
To be folded into AES-X113, and retired after AES-X113 is published. No action required until AES-X113 is published.

AES14-R: Review of AES14-1992 (r2004): AES Standard for professional audio equipment - Application of connectors, part 1, XLR-type polarity and gender
No action was requested or required.

AES26-R: Review of AES26-2001 (r2006): AES recommended practice for professional audio - Conservation of the polarity of audio signals
No action was requested or required.

AES45-R: Review of AES45-2001 (r2006): AES standard for single programme connectors - Connectors for loudspeaker-level patch panels
No action was requested or required.

Development Projects

AES-X011: Fiber-Optic Audio Connections: Connectors and Cables Being Used and Considered for Audio
The meeting felt that harsh-environment connectors should not be included in this general document but should be considered separately (see also below). A secretariat-formatted draft based on the existing document is needed as soon as possible.

AES-X105: Modified XLR-3 Connector for Digital Audio
A secretariat-formatted draft based on the existing document is needed as soon as possible, including drawings from project AES-X119. The project intent should be changed to "Standard".

AES-X113: Universal female phone jack
Secretariat to add material dated 2007-09-22 from M. Natter as a new Annex A, and move existing annexes accordingly.

AES-X123: XL Connectors to Improve Electromagnetic Compatibility
The project is intended to produce several output documents. The initial document [AES-X123A] is intended to specify circumferential contact between male and female XLR connector shells. Secretariat to format document dated 2006-05-12 from Neutrik as a Standard for this intent.

We are awaiting a draft of the filtering standard from J. Woodgate, and a rationale for filtering from J. Brown.

AES-X130: Data Connector in a XL Connector Shell
Secretariat to update the current draft. References to Cat 5 shall be changed to Cat 5e (because Cat 5 has been withdrawn as a standard). New drawings from Natter shall be used to replace existing drawings. The minimum number of mating cycles shall be specified to be 2500. Dimensions AM, CM, DM, and P of Table 1 are not normative for this standard and shall be moved to a new table of informative dimensions.

Liaisons

Nothing to report.

New projects

Harsh-environment fiber-optic connectors. To simplify the document being developed under AES-X011, considerations of harsh-environment fiber-optic connectors will be considered under a new project. A PIR will be raised under the provisional project ID AES-X173.

High performance data connector in ruggedized shell. Because the connector specified in AES-X130 may be limited to applications up to Cat 5e, a higher-performance connector has been proposed. The intent is to produce a standard to specify a ruggedized data connector compatible with 8-pole modular connectors (RJ45) with minimum Cat6 performance. A PIR will be raised under the provisional project ID AES-X174.

New business

There was no new business.

The next meeting will be scheduled in conjunction with the AES 124th Convention in Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2008-05.
