SC-03-06 meeting, San Francisco, 2006-10

Report of the SC-03-06 Working Group on Digital Library and Archive Systems of the SC-03 Subcommittee on the Preservation and Restoration of Audio Recording meeting, held in San Francisco, 2006-10-07

The meeting was convened by chair D. Ackerman.

The agenda and the report from the previous meeting were accepted as written. In discussion, C. Chambers gave a brief report on the SC-03-07 meeting and noted that the confusion over X98A was due to a clerical error where the transfer of that document from SC-03-06 to SC-03-07 had not been reported correctly.

This document was discussed at length and it was determined that it was ready to advance to PWD with a small number of edits. A series of comments from M. Casey of Indiana University were discussed. As a result of Casey's comments, the group decided to amend the document abstract to include the term technical metadata; to substitute the term micrometer for micron; correct the language for the shell dimension element to remove references to the word 'height'; and to add millimeters per second to the speed measurement enumeration. It was determined by the group that total tape thickness is the more obvious and measurable value and that we should have a single element for this value. Any desire to reinterpret this value as base film thickness may be accomplished within a user interface, provided that the tape stock is known.

U. Henry asked that the checksumKind data element be changed into an enumeration to control the value. He also requested that the table of sample rates be updated to reflect the 2x and 4x multiplier now available in TCF (AES31-3).

The chair suggested adding a checksum field for qualifying just the sound data payload in audio files. This should allow headers to be edited without sacrificing the ability to verify that the audio data is unchanged. The group agreed to the addition.

M. Yonge pointed out that analog discs are manufactured through a press moulding process and asked that INJECTION_MOULDING be changed accordingly.

The chair agreed to make changes to correct the above issues, plus a handful of spelling errors that were found. The document will be posted to the groups download page by 2006-10-10 with the changes.
