Meeting of SC-04-01, 2003-10

Report of the SC-04-01 Working Group on Acoustics and Sound Source Modeling, of the SC-04 Subcommittee on Acoustics meeting, held in conjunction with the AES 115th Convention in New York, NY., US., 2003-10-11

The meeting was convened by chair R. Campbell.

The agenda and the report of the previous meeting, 2002-10-07, were accepted as written.

Development projects

AES-X05 Room and Source Simulators: Specification and Evaluation of Computer Models for Design and Auralization; Recommendations for Transportable Input and Output Files
This task group is recommended to be retired after this report. It was decided that each room acoustic modeling program should be encouraged to export a text-based geometry file together with a clear explanation of its contents so that another program may optionally write an import routine.

AES-X83 Loudspeaker Polar Radiation Measurements Suitable for Room Acoustics

The latest draft from B. Olson, X83-BO-PTD-021111.PDF was reviewed in detail.

It was decided to create two types of radiation measurement schemes based upon usage. Loudspeakers designed for mounting in plane surfaces and used at less that 5 meters from the listener (ceiling, wall, etc) shall be identified as a Type () and allowed to have a coarser angular measurement that those used at greater than 5 meters and not designed for plane surface mounting. The next draft will show 15-degree off-axis points from 0 to 75, and 15 degrees around the circle. This computes to 240 measurement point on the hemisphere for this type of loudspeaker.

The other type of loudspeaker will remain as written in the AES-X83 draft but with some editorial changes and clarifications.

It is imperative that this Standard be completely compatible with AES2-R and AES-X72 (SC-04-03) where work is continuing apace. AES-X83 will be a subset of AES2 as pertains to room acoustic modeling programs. Examples of required compatibility are data file structure and definition of center of rotation.

The changes that were identified will appear in the next draft to be posted soon by Olson and will be discussed at the Berlin meeting.

AES-X108 Measurement of the acoustical and electroacoustic characteristics of personal computers

No activity - recommended for retirement.

AES-X122 Loudspeaker Radiation and Acoustical Surface Data Measurements: How They Apply to Usage Environments

No activity - continue postponement until AES-X83 is complete.

Liaisons

Continue working closely with AES2 to be certain of compatibility.
