SC-05-05 meeting, Dublin, 2019-3

Report of the meeting of the SC-05-05 Working Group on Grounding and EMC Practices held in Dublin, Ireland, 2019-03-21

The meeting was convened at 10:00 by acting chairman B Olson.

In attendance were P Treleaven, J Woodgate, B Olson, R Cabot, J Britto, M Law, A Kuzub by remote link.

The formal notice on patent policy was read.

The meeting agenda was accepted as written.

Minutes of previous meeting in New York, 2018-10-18 were approved.

Projects assigned to this group but not mentioned here had no action requested or required - see www.aes.org/standards/meetings/project-status.cfm for details.

Open Projects:

AES48-R: AES standard on interconnections — Grounding and EMC practices — Shields of connectors in audio equipment containing active circuitry
Scope: This standard specifies requirements for the connections of the designated shield contact of connectors built into audio equipment using active circuitry. These requirements are necessary for the preservation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) at both audio and radio frequencies.

Discussion: A new revision of this standard was published in 2019. It would ordinarily become passive for 3 years but it will remain active pending a revision tied to a submission from Anthony Kuzub. This will be discussed later.

AES54-1: AES standard on interconnections - Grounding and EMC practices - Connection of cable shields within connectors attached to portable balanced audio cables
Scope: This standard specifies requirements for, and summarizes general considerations relative to, the connection of cable shields within connectors attached to portable balanced cables for the transmission of audio, taking into account measures commonly necessary for the preservation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) at both audio and radio frequencies. This standard shall apply to all portable cables not integral to equipment. This standard does not apply to fixed connector panels, portable connector panels, jack fields (patch bays), nor to microphone splitters. This standard does not address issues of safety.

Discussion: This was posted for reaffirmation on 2019/02/07. Comments close today.

AES54-2: AES standard on interconnections - Grounding and EMC practices - Shields of balanced audio wiring within fixed and portable passive connector panels, jack fields, and passive microphone splitters
Scope: This standard specifies requirements for, and summarizes general considerations relative to, the shielding of balanced audio interconnections within fixed and portable connector panels, jack fields (patch bays) and within passive microphone splitters, taking into account measures commonly necessary for the preservation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) at both audio and radio frequencies. Active splitters are not covered by this standard. This standard does not address issues of safety.

Discussion: This was posted for reaffirmation on 2019/02/07. Comments close today.

AES54-3: AES standard on interconnections - Grounding and EMC practices - Shields of balanced microphone-level outputs of active equipment other than microphones
Scope: This standard specifies requirements for, and summarizes general considerations relative to, the shielding of balanced microphone-level outputs of audio equipment, taking into account measures commonly necessary for the preservation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) at both audio and radio frequencies. Wired microphones, including capacitor microphones, are not covered by this standard, and shall conform to AES48. This standard does not address issues of safety.

Discussion: This was posted for reaffirmation on 2019/02/07. Comments close today.

Proposed: AES54-4: AES standard on interconnections - Grounding and EMC practices - Shields of DB25 type connectors
Scope: This standard specifies requirements for, and summarizes general considerations relative to, the shielding of DB25 type connectors used for multichannel connections of audio equipment, taking into account measures commonly necessary for the preservation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) at both audio and radio frequencies. This standard does not address issues of safety.

Discussion: The working group decided to develop a new standard based on a 2018/10/24 proposal from A Kuzub which illustrates correct grounding of DB25 style connectors used to carry multichannel signals. The Secretary will prepare the new project paperwork.
