SC-02-12 meeting, Milan, Italy, 2018-5

Report of the meeting of the SC-02-12 Working Group on Audio Applications of Networks of the SC-02 Subcommittee on Digital Audio, held in Milan, Italy, 2018-05-23.

The meeting was convened by chair Morten Lave.

The report of the previous meeting, held in New York, NY, US, 2018-10-21, was approved as written.

The formal notice on patent policy was read.

The agenda was approved.

Projects assigned to this group but not mentioned here had no action requested or required - see www.aes.org/standards/meetings/project-status.cfm for details.

Open Projects:

AES64-R: Review of AES64-2012, AES standard for audio applications of networks - Command, control, and connection management for integrated media
This standard is retired.

AES67-R - Review of AES67-2015 High-performance streaming audio-over-IP interoperability
Finished, published in April, review of AES67-2018.

AES-X226 AES67 protocol implementation
This project will be closed when the new revision of AES67 is approved as it will contain the conformance statements which are the scope of this project.

AES-R16 AES Standards Report - PTP parameters for AES67 and SMPTE ST 2059-2 interoperability
This report will be marked as completed (Action to R. Cabot).

X243 – project to produce a recommended practice, Using AES70 for connecting AES67 streams.
Requested the group to review documents, some pushback. Waiting for comments, hopefully some will come.

AES70-1-R Review of AES70-1-2015: AES standard for audio applications of networks (framework)

AES70-2-R Review of AES70-2-2015: AES standard for audio applications of networks (class structure)

AES70-3-R Review of AES70-3-2015: AES standard for audio applications of networks (TCP/IP networks)
Draft ready in about 2 weeks, then handle approval electronically. circulated for comment. 2-4 weeks.

Worked with the Chinese Standards org. This week we received an important translation of part the standard including a reverse translation. SC-02-12L will be reviewing this reverse translation.

The part 2 UML will not be translated.

AES-X238 Media network directory architecture
Public call for comment. The call is in the form of a draft requirement statement, almost 0 comments (1). Will republish, haven’t had time.

Persuaded SMPTE to comment, most important group to get comments from.

Attempting to harmonize 3 things: SMPTE 2071 directory, NMOS, AES – happy confluence of work if it all works out.

Exploring process of setting up more formal contact with SMPTS and potentially creating a joint standard. It was mentioned that we will need some formal structure for making that happen.

AES-X242 Streaming audio metadata over IP
Nothing to report.

AES-X244 Loudness Guidelines for Over the Top Television and Online Video Distribution
Nothing to report.

Liaisons:

Liaison with Avnu ProAV AVTP
Morten Lave

The group is working on an AVB interoperability spec. for pro-audio. They have also developed a specification for dual LAN redundancy expected to be published in July.

Liaison with MPEG
John Grant

Nothing to report.

Liaison with IEC62379-1
Peter Stevens

Proposed by BBC and is partly the same of SMPTE 2071, published but there isn’t much going on. There is good stuff in it about controlling devices but in reality more about controlling the studio. Done in the days of ATM.

Parts for audio and video devices.

EBU revived it for a while, part 7 which is testing, was used and some definitions from part 3.

Liaison with mobile
John Grant

The 5G work. collecting requirements for operators. Really low latency for live media. tactile feedback etc but would work well for audio as well. Not clear how much traction it is getting.

Another group UK 5K hosted by Cambridge Wireless, informal group compared to the one above.

5G starting with rel 15, rel 17 would potentially have this new technology. The part between the phone and the gateway to the internet. Rel 16.

ST 2059 (Use of PTP for professional media sync.)
Kevin Gross, Paul Trevelesen

A member but have not been participating.

Paul, project has bene on the way for a while and currently dealing with issues found in interop. A few issues in part 1 and alignment are being dealt with. Believe that the R16 recommendations are included as recommendations.

Target lock time is being removed, it is an implementation factor.

AES-X075 Liaison with IEC TC100 for IEC 61883
Not active

New Business:

No new business.
